Welcome to Byron Center AYSO

How To Volunteer!

Coaching children in sports is a very rewarding experience, and coaching your own child's team is one of the best experiences you can have. Coaching is essential to the success of AYSO, and we are always in need of coaches in all divisions.

To become an AYSO coach, register as a volunteer. The volunteer registration process is similar to registering your child as a player. Once you login you will have the opportunity to register as a coach. Make sure you choose the division you want to coach! As part of the volunteer registration process you'll undergo a background check, this is an AYSO requirement to ensure the safety of the kids.  You will need to volunteer/ fill out the form EVERY year.

We provide all coach training!  A couple of the certifications are required for all volunteers: these are Safe Haven and Concussion Awareness. Both are available on AYSOu.org as online courses. Additionally, each coach must be certified at the level they are coaching. Training classes are available periodically and coach candidates can register for these classes on AYSOu.org.

Divisions Explained/ Responsibilities

Coaching responsibilities:

5U & 6U
These are Saturday only divisions.  You only coach on Saturdays.  Practices are held at the start of your game time.  Practices are 20-30 minutes.  After practice, you have your game.  Games consist of 5 minutes for the quarters, 2-5 minutes halftime.  Coaches are on the field helping players and cheering them on.

8U
This division has 1, 1 hour practice each week of the season. Games consist of 10 minutes quarters with breaks at the end of each quarter and 5 minutes for the half. Coaches generally referee these games. Refereeing an 8U games consists of starting the game, breaking at the end of quarters/half,  calling if the balls goes out of bounds, keeping time, and ending the game.

10U
This division has 2, 1 hour practices each week of the season.  Games REQUIRE a referee.

12U
This division has 2, 1-1.5 hours of practice each week of the season.  Games REQUIRE a referee.  Teams in this division travel to other AYSO regions for games (all within the Grand Rapids area) and play against other BC AYSO teams or other AYSO regional teams at Douglas Walker Park.

14U (Intermediate)
This division has 2, 1-1.5 hours of practice each week of the season.  Games REQUIRE a referee.  Teams in this division play other AYSO regions away and at Douglas Walker Park.
